9. NATURAL SEA SPONGE.

Q. What is a Natural Sea Sponge?
A. i. For pure bathing luxury there is no contest when it comes to choosing between a real natural sea sponge and a synthetic sponge. Natural sea sponges are stronger, much softer, absorb more water, do not retain odours, and last much longer.
ii. The use of natural sea sponge dates back to at least the time of ancient Greeks and Romans, when sponges were not only used for bathing, but for various other tasks including carrying of water, and as drinking vessels. Even today there is a strong commercial market for natural sea sponges in the arts, crafts, painting, polishing and for other industrial uses.
iii. Natural Sea Sponge is from the sea. It was generally believed that natural sea sponge is a plant, and it was only in the nineteenth century that scientists finally classified the sponge as an animal. It is a simple multicellular animal called “Porifera”, with no organs. Scientists believe that sponge has remained relatively unchanged for more than 500 million years, and will probably still inhibit the waters of the world long after all evidence of human occupation has gone. There are more than 5000 species of the sponge, but only a handful are suitable for bathing and other uses. The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is one of the main sources of the world’s best commercial sponges.
iv. Sponges are harvested by divers or fishing vessels, using specialised nets and equipment. When harvesting care is taken to leave roots attached to the rocks from which a new sponge will grow. Harvesting of sponges is strictly regulated to avoid disruption of the ecological marine balance. Sponges have an ability to regenerate into new individuals from even the tiniest fragment of the original, and can lie dormant when their natural habitat have been destroyed or damaged. When conditions improve, these fragments will start growing.
v. The sponge as we use, bears little resemblance to the original sea sponge. This is the skeleton structure made from elastic and resistant organic material called spongin. The sponge is purified, treated and bleached to give it the light yellow colour.
vi. Use & Looking after your NATURAL SEA SPONGE. – While care is taken to remove all impurities, it is recommended that before using your natural sea sponge for the first time, wash and rinse thoroughly to remove any particles imbedded in the sponge. After use, rinse thoroughly, remove all soap and detergent. Soap and detergent left in the sponge, will over time corrode the sponge tissue. Leave to dry naturally in a ventilated place with good air circulation.
